You can verify this by looking at other SME arms e.g. ![]() The latter is that shape to accommodate the sliding base and not the other way round. The SME 3009 arm base wiring harness is covered by a screening can which has been designed as an oblong ( more correctly a geometric figure called a stadium) to fit with the arm mounting hole. While I understand how you may have arrived at your conclusion I think that you have reversed cause and effect.
